William was baptised on 14th November 1792 at St Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden, Essex.[1] He was the son of Thomas Pluck and Ann (Elborn) Pluck. The register notes that he was one year old at the time.
William Pluck and Sarah Ann Wilmoth were married after banns at Holy Trinity, Queenborough, Kent on 25th June 1815.[2][3] They were bachelor and spinster and both of the parish. William signed his own name on the register whilst Sarah could only make her mark with a cross. The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Guttridge and Jane Dawsett.
In 1841 William and his family were living in New Wood Street, Minster, Sheppey, Essex.[4] William was 50, a bricklayer and his wife Sarah gave her age as 45. They had 6 children at home with them: Sarah (20), Edward (15), Jane (10), Daniel (7), Matilda (5), and George (3). With the exception of William, all were born in the county.
The family were still in New Wood Street, in Mile Town Sheerness in 1851. William was 59 and a bricklayer and his wife Sarah was 54. William gave his birthplace as North End whilst Sarah said she was from Sheerness. Still at home were Matilda, 15 and working as a dressmaker, and Alice, 9 who was a scholar. Both were born in Sheerness.[5]
In 1861 the family were in Sheerness. William was 69, a bricklayer who gave his place of birth as Minster, Kent. His wife Sarah, also from Minster, was 65. All the children had left home.[6]
William died in 1863 at the age of 72.[7] He was buried in Halfway Cemetery, Sheppey on 22nd February 1863(Plot F, Grave 129).[8] The register gave his residence as Sun Street and that he was a bricklayer.
