Geoffrey was the fourth son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.
During Geoffrey's marriage to Constance, two daughters, Eleanor and Matilda, were born, and on 29 March 1187 the duchess gave birth to a posthumous son, Arthur, duke of Brittany.
"After a final sojourn in his duchy Geoffrey returned again to Paris where he died on 19 August 1186, either from wounds received in a tournament, subsequent complications arising from such wounds, or the effects of an unrelated illness, which Gerald of Wales called a fever and Roger of Howden a bowel complaint. He was buried with great pomp in the choir of Notre Dame, where according to some accounts a distraught Philip Augustus had to be forcibly prevented from throwing himself into the grave; he later endowed masses in Geoffrey's memory."
