Biography

The House of Plantagenet crest.
Alphonse (Plantagenet) of England is a member of the House of Plantagenet.

Alphonso, the ninth child of Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile, was born 24 November 1273. [1]

Alphonso was born at Bayonne, in Gascony, and named after his maternal uncle, King Alfonso X of Castile, who was his godfather. Alphonso died at Windsor, aged ten, shortly after the birth of his younger brother (later Edward II ofEngland). His death left his brother as the only surviving male heir of Edward I. Alphonso was interred at Westminster Abbey.

Alphonse of England died at Windsor Castle, Berkshire 19 August 1284. His body was buried at Westminster Abbey, and his heart in the church of the Black Friars, London. [2]

He had his own household as a child as is evidenced by the Close Rolls, which grant to Master Martin de Ispan(nia), cook of Alphonsus the king's son.

At the age of ten, he was engaged to Margaret, daughter of Floris V, Count of Holland, and an opulent psalter was being prepared for the marriage when he died a few months before the wedding was to take place. [3]

Alphonso's death at Windsor occurred shortly after the birth of his younger brother (later Edward II of England), who became the only surviving male heir of Edward I. Alphonso was interred in The Confessors Chapel at Westminster Abbey, although the exact location is unknown. His heart, however, was buried at the priory of Blackfriars, London (now destroyed). [3]

"He died about four months after the birth of Edward of Carnarvon, on the Feast of St. Magnus (14 Aug.), 1284, and was buried, in Westminster Abbey, on the Vigil of Decollation of St. John Baptist (28 Aug.) Oliver says that this Prince was born in 1275, but in error."

UNKNOWN-57901 and Plantagenet-164 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate, the "unknown" one being simply the victim of a bad Gedcom upload.
Of Castile-83 and Plantagenet-164 appear to represent the same person because: They had the same birth and death dates, and same parents. The best LNAB is Plantagenet and not Of Castile, as Castilla or Castile was his mother's 'maiden' name. Please merge these two profiles
