Biography

Grace (Piper) Dufty came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

Grace Piper was born in 1811 in Devon, England, United Kingdom and christened on 28th December 1811. She was the daughter of John Piper (1771-1832) and Anne Simons (1780-1829). [1]

Grace married William Dufty on 14th December 1831 in Shebbear, in Devon's north west. [2]

The family, comprising parents and seven children, migrated to South Australia (Australia) aboard the Osceola, arriving on 5th April 1851. Their then youngest daughter, Esther, died during the voyage. [3]

Aged about 40 years, Grace passed away in childbirth in 1851 in South Australia. [4] William subsequently married again in 1857 in the Adelaide Hills and settled in New South Wales, having at least another seven children. Grace and William's children married and remained in the Yankalilla district south of Adelaide:

  6. Martha (c1843-); married James Cannan in 1858 in Encounter Bay
  7. Esther (c1847-51)
  8. Lydia Piper (1851-); married Alfred Newman in 1878 in Yankalilla
