Military Service

Hal joined the U.S. Army Air Corps on 29 Jany 1942, two days after his brother John signed up. He had not even registered for the draft yet. [1] [3]

He became a pilot of B-24 Liberators for the 44th Bombardment Group, known as the Flying Eightballs, flying out of England and participated in missions over Nazi occupied Europe. On 29 January 1944 during a bombing mission to Frankfort, Germany, on only his 10th mission, his plane, the Sky Queen, was attacked by German fighters and was shot down by an FW-190. [8] It was reported that the plane took hits to the right wing causing it to lose altitude. Of the 10 man crew, only 5 survived the attack and became German POWs. [12]

According to testimony by S/Sgt Fred D Brown who was also shot down in that raid, while evading the Germans he met a man on a bicycle who, while holding out a card he found in a parachute, asked him if he was the name on the card: H.H. Pinder. This occurred near Gouvy, Belgium. [13]

S/Sgt Fred D Brown Escape and Evasion Testimony

Captured by the Germans, he was first held as a POW at Stalag Luft III, Sagan-Silesia Bavaria. Due to Soviet troop advances in the winter of 1944 Hal was moved to Stalag XIII-D, Nuremberg-Langwasser where he was held until this camp was liberated by Allied troops on 16 April, 1945. [4] [9]
