Biography

This profile is part of the Pike Name Study.

February 23, 2015: John moved his family several times between Davidson and Sumner counties in Tennessee. He married Susan Ragan in Davidson in 1836 and then shows up in the 1840 Sumner census, near 2 other Pikes, Joab and James. The 1850 Davidson census lists John and Susan with children Thomas, 13; Elizabeth A., 10; James W., 7; Hariet, 5; Loty, 3. Neighbors include William H. Ragan , 36; wife Harriet, 24; and son Henry, 8. William is probably Susan's brother. Other neighbors include Tinon, Warmack, Hackney, Foster and Shivers. Although John is noted as illiterate, both Thomas and Elizabeth attended school in 1850 as did their cousin Henry Ragan. No one else among the neighbors is listed as unable to read and write. It appears they don't own their farm-no value of real estate listed. Interestingly, the next resident over, Elizabeth Tinon 60, has real estate valued at $8000 and the the eldest Warmack and Foster, $2000 and $1600 respectively.

The 1860 District 8 Sumner Census has John numbered with the previous family and named incorrectly, Pikes. Perhaps the census taker just numbered the women as family head because it is consistent on page 125? Then the 20th Civic district, Davidson census lists John with Susan; John, 20; and Preston, 12. More research required to confirm birth and death facts, and participation in civil war.
