Biography

He spent the first 55 years of his life in Connecticut, marrying in 1956. He became a grandfather at the age of 51, retired from teaching at the age of 55 and moved to Florida. He moved back to Connecticut in 2003, where he stayed.

• "Norman E. Pierpont, 77, of Oxford, CT died December 10, 2011. He was born on Aug. 10 in New Haven to Douglas Montgomery Pierpont, Sr. and Edna Irene Thomas Pierpont. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Joan Greene Pierpont, daughters Donna J. Pierpont and her husband Rob McLaughlin of Brewster, NY, Carol Papp and her husband David Papp of Oxford and son Richard D. Pierpont of Hooksett, NH. He is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer and Kimberly Pierpont, Sophie McLaughlin, and Aidan and Ashely Papp. Norm was one of seven children and is survived by his sister Ruth Gray of Mena, AR; a brother Howard Pierpont of Stratford; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by siblings Robert Pierpont, Jane Pierpont Anderson, Alice Pierpont Juul, and Doughlas M. Pierpont, Jr. Norm graduated Hamden High School in 1952, the New York State Maritime College in 1956, and earned a Master's degree from University of Houston in Geology in 1967. Norm and Joan met at 4-H Camp in Warren, where they both held summer jobs as camp counselors. They married after college, and Norm served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Later he became a teacher and taught math and science at Henry Abbott Technical High School in Danbury, where he was Department Head, earning a Director's Award, and selected as Teacher of the Year in 1987-88. He and Joan raised their family in Brookfield, he was a member of the Brookfield Jaycees and served on the Board of Directors of the Laurel Hill Cemetery Association. Norm was a lifelong educator and, after retiring to Florida, volunteered many hours as a tutor in the Venice, FL school system. After 11 years, Norm and Joan returned to their native Connecticut to be near children and grandchildren."
