Henry was born in 1834 Rev. James D. Pickands and Louisa Sparks. He moved with his family to Akron where he was a clerk. By 1860 he and his parents have moved to Cleveland and he is a salesman. From April 16-August 1, 1861 he served as a private in Company E (Cleveland Grays), 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On 14 Aug 1862 he enlisted with Company G of the 103rd OVI as a 1st Lieutenant and then was promoted to Captain on 9 Dec 1862. He was transferred to Field & Staff of the 103rd on 18 May 1865 and mustered out as a Major on 12 Jun 1865. After the war he returned to Cleveland and went back to work as a salesman for a shoe manufacturing company. By 1879 he has moved his family to Fruitport, Muskegon County, Michigan and he is the General Manager for the Spring Lake Iron Company. A junction of the M. & L.S. with the Chicago & Western Michigan Railroads provided a track to the Spring Lake Iron Works, after whose general manager, Major Henry S. Pickands, it was named when built in 1880.[1] After leaving the Spring Lake Iron Works, Henry became senior member of the Pickands, Brown and Company Iron Firm in Chicago, Illinois. He passed away at the Virginia Hotel in Chicago after battling kidney disease for several weeks in 1901.[2]
