Oliver married a Palmer in Newburyport, Mass., came here about 1766. About the time that Jefferson was president of the U.S., at the solicitation of his wife, he returned to Newburyport. Some of his younger children may have been dazzled by the blaze of democracy, but Oliver Perley soon returned to the Saint John river. He purchased the property known for many years as the Perley place situate near McGowan's wharf on the St. John river and owned now by James Harrison's family and Archibald Cowperthwaite.
Moses Henry Perley was born at Maugerville, Dec. 31st, 1804. He was, through his mother, a grandson of Israel Perley, the leader of the Maugerville Colony as described below, and through his father, also named Moses, a grandson of Oliver, brother of Israel Perley. His early boyhood was passed at Maugerville, but [he received his primary] school education in St. John. He studied law and was called to the Bar in 1830.
