Biography

Hector was born in Hant's Harbour, Newfoundland, in 1919, the son of Arthur and Lilly (Button) Pelley.^[1] The family immigrated to the United States in 1924. At the time of the 1930 census, he lived with his parents and 7 siblings in Everett, Massachusetts. His father worked as a carpenter.^[2] He later lived with his family in Newton, New Hampshire.^[3]

He served with the United States Marines Corps during World War II. He served with the 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division. He was killed in action at Iwo Jima on February 20, 1945. He is buried at the Glenwood Cemetery in Everett, Mass.^[4] His name is also on the World War II memorial of local men killed during the war, located at Trum Field in Somerville.
