Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
Emma (Pellew) Halsted was born in Truro, Cornwall, England.

Emma was the oldest child of Vice Admiral Sir Edward Pellew RN 1st Viscount Exmouth and Lady Susannah Frowde Pellew. She was baptized at St. Mary's Parish Church in Truro on 29 April 1785[1][2].

St Mary's Church

The Pellews were a family of long standing in Cornwall, having come from Normandy before that. Emma's father, Edward, had a legendary maritime career filled with acts of heroism. Eventually he was made 1st Viscount of Exmouth in 1816. He was in active service throughout Emma's childhood[3].

Emma married Admiral Sir Lawrence William Halstead GCB RN, a captain in the Royal Navy, at St Melorus Church in Mylor on 7 September 1804[4].

St Mylor (Melorus) Church

The couple had at least 11 verified children:

  1. Emma Mary (Halsted) Braune born in 1804 in Stansted, Essex
  2. Lieutenant Colonel William Anthony Halstead born in 1805 in Plymouth, Devon
  3. Rear Admiral Edward Pellew Halsted RN born 28 December 1807 in East Teignmouth, Devon
  4. Susan Amelia (Halsted) Fox born 13 November 1809 in Gosport
  5. Baroness Julia Pellew (Halsted, Harward) Von Borstell born about September 1811
  6. Louisa Caroline (Halsted) Isdell born 22 October 1813
  7. Elizabeth Hamilton Halsted born 24 October 1815
  8. Major Charles Frankland Fleetwood Halsted born 13 October 1817
  9. Lieutenant Lawrence George Halsted RN baptized 6 October 1820
  10. Jane Plummer Halsted born 20 July 1822 in Alton, Hampshire
  11. Mary Anne Winthrop (Halsted) Crawford born 4 March 1829 in Saint-German-En-Laye, France

Emma's children were born in a wide variety of locations, including her youngest being born abroad in France. Her fifth through tenth children were all born in Alton, Hampshire, suggesting that Emma and her family had established a stable residence by 1811. Emma's fourth child was born in Gosport which was the birthplace of her husband and presumably still the home of his family. The circumstances which took Emma to the locations where her other children were born (Stansted, Plymouth, East Teignmouth and Saint-Germain-en-Laye) remain a matter of conjecture for now.

Emma died on 3 March 1835 and was buried at St James the Apostle Church in Christow, Devon on 11 March 1835. Her position as eldest daughter of the 1st Viscount of Exmouth was noted in her burial record. The service was performed by her son-in-law, Reverend George Martin Braune[5].

St James the Apostle Church

An obituary published in the Norfolk Chronicle and Norwich Gazette reported that Emma died after a brief illness and left behind her husband and eleven children to grieve her loss[6].
