The Pellews were a family of long standing in Cornwall, having come from Normandy before that. Emma's father, Edward, had a legendary maritime career filled with acts of heroism. Eventually he was made 1st Viscount of Exmouth in 1816. He was in active service throughout Emma's childhood[3].
Emma married Admiral Sir Lawrence William Halstead GCB RN, a captain in the Royal Navy, at St Melorus Church in Mylor on 7 September 1804[4].

The couple had at least 11 verified children:
Emma's children were born in a wide variety of locations, including her youngest being born abroad in France. Her fifth through tenth children were all born in Alton, Hampshire, suggesting that Emma and her family had established a stable residence by 1811. Emma's fourth child was born in Gosport which was the birthplace of her husband and presumably still the home of his family. The circumstances which took Emma to the locations where her other children were born (Stansted, Plymouth, East Teignmouth and Saint-Germain-en-Laye) remain a matter of conjecture for now.
Emma died on 3 March 1835 and was buried at St James the Apostle Church in Christow, Devon on 11 March 1835. Her position as eldest daughter of the 1st Viscount of Exmouth was noted in her burial record. The service was performed by her son-in-law, Reverend George Martin Braune[5].

An obituary published in the Norfolk Chronicle and Norwich Gazette reported that Emma died after a brief illness and left behind her husband and eleven children to grieve her loss[6].
