Excerpt about Joseph Peden in 'Pedens in America'

"The following is something of the history of our branch of the Peden family as I obtained it from my old uncle, Daniel L. H. Peden, who died in 1873. I visited him some time prior to his death, at which time he gave me his best recollection of our family genealogy, to wit :

"Near the close of sixteenth century a Peden (given name not remembered), went from Glasgow, Scotland, to London as chief baker to royal family. The baker had a son, Joseph, who went to the north of Ireland, and his son, Samuel Peden, came to America about the year 1750, and settled in York County, Penna., where he married a Miss Potter, and they had born to them six children as follows : Obadiah Peden, Samuel Peden, Lydia Peden, Joseph Peden (my grandfather), Isaac Peden and Alexander Peden. Joseph Peden married Miss Rebecca Driver, of York County, Penna., an own cousin of Patrick Henry of Revolutionary fame. To them was born the following children, to wit : Margaret Peden, James Peden (my father), Jesse Peden, Elizabeth Peden, Joseph Peden, Daniel T.H. Peden, David Peden, Isaiah Peden, Samuel Peden and Abner Peden. The two eldest were born in York County and the others in Washington County, Penna. Grandfather Peden was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and he being a gunsmith by trade was detailed to make guns for the army in the field. Grandfather died in Washington County, Penna., aged 94 years, and his father, Obadiah Peden, died in York County at the age of 100 years. These have all passed over to the great beyond long years ago. This ends Uncle Daniel's story. Obituary

OBITUARY-Communicated Another revolutionary soldier has paid the debt of nature. -Dr. JOSEPH PEDEN known to the citizens of Washington County for more than 50 years. departed this life at his residence in East Finley township, on Saturday the 5th inst.. at a very advanced age--we see that a contemporary journal puts it down at about 97 years. Dr. Peden was in some respects a remarkable man - as an itinerating botanical professor of the healing art, there have been few indeed it is doubtful whether there were any in his day, not an educated physician, who have travelled more in this and other counties west of the mountains, in administering to the afflicted [sic], sick, halt and maimed. more extensively or more fully-whether any pecuniary reward was to follow seemed to him or not the least consideration, and where that had been tendered, he has been known even to decline the acceptance in many cases, particularly where those to when he administered were poor in the things of this world. In numerous instances, to the afflicted poor he was as the good Samaritan, administering to their sustenance and comfort and imitating in some degree the Saviour's example, going about doing good, healing where he could, the diseased without fee or reward. intimating with artless benevolence. that it was our duty to love and assist each other and that those who now were the recipients of his good acts should do to others in like manner. It is not known to the writer, that Dr. Peden was a professor of religion, though in many of the virtues of the christian character he exhibited in his walk and conversation most bright and commendable examples, well worthy of invitation by the sincere professor and follower of the religion of Jesus Christ. He was born in York county of this State and of parents belonging to the Society of Friends, and that may account for his not making a profession of religion: (if it be the fact that he did not) in any of our protestant churches. As to dress he was very indifferent and plain, not seeming to care with what he was clothed, and to some he might appear to be mean in this respect; but there was nothing further from his character than meanness of any kind--possessing nothing of a sordid or worldly spirit, he lived apparently from choice a self-denying, devoted, laborious life. doing good where he could, and died a poor man. though at one time in this county he owned pretty large and good landed estates; and that he did not die in its possession is only to be accounted for from the benevolence of his character and the kindness of his heart. At an early period of the revolutionary war. then residing in York county. Penn., he volunteered in the Pennsylvania line and served under captain Orbison in the regiment of colonel Sinyser. As a volunteer he marched to Yorktown, in Virginia, where he enlisted for and during the war as an artificer, occasionally serving in the ranks as a soldier, and where he worked repairing arms. &c., for the army, having Iearned the gunsmith business at York. Pa. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis and was one of the guard of British prisoners after their surrender on their march to near York. Pa., where he obtained an honorable discharge, but lost it in crossing the Conewango creek. on his way home, (the water being high) in struggling in the stream for his life. The services of Dr. Peden as a soldier of the war of the revolution could not be questioned, for he was a man of strict truth, and the main facts of that service were substantiated in the pension department, by certificates and by oath: but, in consequence of some slight disagreement between a part of his statement and certain facts of the revolut- ionary period known to the department. he was denied a place on the pension list. and never received a cent from the government, which from facts known to the writer he deserved equally with any other honored name now there enrolled; and which had he obtained. might have rendered his last days in helpless age and infirmity, more tolerable, if not comfortable. To the honor of our good State, however. it may be stated, that the worthy old veteran for several years up to his decease, enjoyed 40 dollars a year from the State of Pennsylyania. His memory is cherished, and will live long in the breasts of many who have experienced his goods deeds. A. [5] Washington Review and Examiner Saturday, Aug 18, 1849 Washington, PA Page: 3
