Biography

When Anna Pearson was born on December 21, 1779, in Pasquotank, North Carolina, her father, Nathan, was 37, and her mother, Rebeckah Symons Low Nicholson, was 36. She was a Quaker and married Stephen Henley on September 30, 1798, in Randolph, North Carolina. They had nine children.

In her grandfather Peter Pearson's Pearson-3085 will, Peter "bequeathed his wife a generous portion of the estate, and to his sons Nathan Pearson-4021 and William Pearson-13749 went a slave, Ike (Isaac)..." In the State Census of North Carolina, 1784-1787, Nathan's household in Pasquotank County included 1 White Male 21-60 years, 2 White Males under 21 and above 60, 4 White Females all ages, and 1 Black 12-50.

After Nathan's death in 1801, a petition was filed December 8, 1801 in Pasquotank, NC by his wife Rebekah Pearson and daughter Ann (Pearson) and Stephen Henley of Randolph County, and his brother William Pearson of Perquimans County, to "free Isaac, a slave man who has lived in Pasquotank County from the time of his infancy. Isaac was deserving of freedom because of his fidelity and the service he had rendered them. They ask Thomas Jordan to submit the manumission petition ." Isaac was freed in 1801 and is not mentioned in William's or Nathan's or Anna's will.

Anna Pearson died on September 12, 1872, in Deep River, North Carolina, at the age of 92.
