He was a banker and philanthropist who died unmarried. He was the son of Thomas Peabody and his wife, Judith Dodge.[1]
In 1862, he set up The Peabody Donation Fund and the first dwellings for the “artisans and labouring poor of London” were opened in Commercial Street, Spitalfields in February 1864. [2]
The city of Massachusetts was named after him.
