[1]William Patterson, son of William and Jane (Culton or Kelton) Patterson, was born about 1760 in Augusta County, VIrginia.[1]

[2]He married his first wife, they had at least four children.[1]

[3]He married Agnes Patton on 10 June 1789 in Montgomery County, Virginia.[1] [4]Edward Morgan, minister, preformed the marriage and reported it to authorities. [5] Revolutionary war Service: Served in the Illinois Regiment, along with friend Hugh McGavock, with George Rogers Clark in the Northwest Territory Campaign.


The family lived in Crockett Cove area of Wythe County Virginia.

William died on 25 Jan. 1825 in Wythe County Virginia and was buried at Old Crockett Cemetery, Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia. This Cemetery is also called Cove John Crockett Cemetery. His memorial has a photo of his headstone, biographical material and links to those of family members.[1]

William Patterson last will and Testament. In the name of God Amen. I William Patterson of the County of Wythe and Commonwealth of Virginia Being sick and weak in Body but of sound mind, memory, and understanding Considering the Certainty of Death, and the uncertainty of the life thereof and being Desirous of Sittling my wordly affair and thereby be the Better prepared to leave this world, when it shall please God to Call one hence, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following. That is to say-

First and principally, I commit my Soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the Earth, to be decently Buried in the Grave yard and near to where my first wife is Buried and after my debts and funeral Charges are paid, I devise and Bequeath as follows.

Item, I give and devise unto my son James the plantation on which I now live, and also all the Farming utensils and Blacksmith Tools that may be on the said place at my Decease, in Consideration of which the said James shall furnish my beloved wife Agnes with a Comfortable Dwelling House on the said place, either the One in which I now reside or build her one close to or adjoining the same as good as the one she now lives in, and to render unto her the said Agnes the one third of the produce of the said plantations in proper season, annually during her Natural life and the said James shall also let my Daughters Matilda and Martha live in the same house with their Mother during her natural life, or untill they Get married or in case they do not marry as long as they may think proper & to have free Egress & Egress at all times Whatever.

Item to my well beloved Wife Agnes Before named I Give and Bequeath three negro Women viz. Grace, Rhoda & Liley, six milch cows, Ten Sheep, Eight Hogs, one Riding mare saddle & Bridle, Six Beds, Bedsteads & furniture, One fall leaf Cherry Table, Six Chairs and one half of the Kitchen furniture to be Equally Divided between her and my son James all which property which property she may dispose of at any time as she may think proper.

Item, to my son Henry I give and Devise the plantation he now lives on in the County of Tazewell, and for which I have made him a Title in fee simple which is to be in full Consideration of his part of all my real and personal Estate.

Item, To my live sons, John & William I give and Bequeath the Amount of the sale of my personal property which may be left after all the foregoing and the following Bequests are made to be Equally Divided Between them by my Executors herein after to be named, as soon as the said Amount shall be by him Collected.

Item I give and devise unto my son Thomas the plantation Commonly known by the School House land, by lines running from Stephen Halsey land up to two White Oaks, and then from the said White Oaks a Direct Course to the Brushy mountain line, to include all the land lying within the said line and the line of George Baker's land to him the said Thomas his Heirs and Assigns in fee simple.

Item, I give and Bequeath unto my son Isaac, the plantation which I purchased of Joseph Baker Containing One Hundred and Thirty Acres by deed to him the said Isaac and his Heirs and Assigns in fee simple.

Item I give and bequeath unto my son Robert One Hundred and Forty acres of Land Lying in the County of Tazewell, adjoining the plantation Devised to my son Henry to him and his Heirs and Assigns in fee simple. I also give and bequeath to Robert one horse Lead.

Item I give and Bequeath unto my son Alexander Harvey-the lower or North East part of the plantation Devised to my son James, to be Divided at the Cross fence Between the two lower meadows, the dividing line to run directly across from One mountain to the Other; to him and his Heirs and Assigns in fee simple-I also give and Bequeath the said Alexander one horse piatt(?).

Item to the Children of William Wallace, who intermarried with my Daughter Mary, but who are both dead-to wit David, Sally, James, William and Polly, I give and bequeath the sum of Five Dollars Each to be paid by my Executors out of any money which may come to his hands of any personal Estate when Called for by them or Either of them.

Item. To John Wallace who married my daughter Betsy, William Glasgow who married my Daughter Sally, Isaac Davis who married my Daughter Jane, Josiah Reeder who married my Daughter Nancy, William Mustard who married my daughter Ann, and to John Mustard who married my Daughter Levicey I have already given that portion of my Estate which I intended, had they not yet received to have given and Bequeathed to them.

Item To my daughters Matilda and Martha I give and Bequeath to Each of them One Riding Horse or mare, saddle & Bridle, two milch cows, two feather Beds and Furniture, and four sheep which they are to Receive when they marry or arrive at the age of Eighteen.

And lastly I do hereby Constitute and appoint my Trusty Friends Hugh and James McGavock, Executors of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament, in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this Ninth day of December in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty four, 1824. Whereas I William Patterson of the County of Wythe and Commonwealth of Virginia have made and duly Executed my last will and Testament Writing Bearing Date the Ninth day of December in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty four which said last will and testament and every Clause, Bequest and Devise therein Contained I do hereby ratify and Confirm, and being Desirous of making some additions thereto, do therefore hereby make this my Codicil, which I will and direct shall be taken and held as part of my said will and Testament in manner and form following, That is to say

Item, To my Beloved wife Agnes and to my son James I give and Devise all my Household Furniture not herin before devised.

Item, All the grain, Hay if that may be on the plantation I now live on at my Decease I give and bequeath to and for the Benefit of that part of my family that may at that time be living with me.

Item, I give and Bequeath to my son Henry two Heiffers.

In Testimony where of I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this Fifteenth day of December in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty four.

This the last will and Testament of William Patterson Decd was presented in Court & proved by the Oaths of Stephen Halsey George Butler George Baker the subscribing Witnesses thereto and a Codicil annexed to said Will was also proved by the Oaths of Stephen Halsey, Andrew Baker & George Baker the subscribing Witnesses thereto and the said will and Codicil are Ordered to be Recorded, And on the motion of Hugh McGavock, One of the Executors named in said Will who entered into Bond with James McGavock his security in the sum of Two Thousand Dollars Conditioned as the Law directs and took the Oath required by Law, Probate of the said Will is Granted him in due form. Teste G. P. Mathews C.C.

My brother and visited the the "Old Crockett Cemetery". Williams marker is overturned, laying flat and sunken below ground level. I hope to get back at some point and stand it up.
