Littleberry Patterson is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A086429.

He was probably born in New Kent County, Virginia about 1754 to Obadiah and Agnes (Gilliam) Patteson. He may have lived in Goochland County a short time before his father and all of his siblings moved to what was then Bedford County (later Campbell, now Appomattox) in the 1760's and remained there for the duration of his life. He married Matilda Smith, whose family owned land downstream on Wreck Island Creek in what was then Buckingham County. His father died intestate, and Littleberry bought several of his siblings' shares of his father's estate and bought some adjacent land as well. His two bachelor brothers, Landis and Poindexter, also remained on their father's land, and his brother David, with whom he swapped land, lived next door as well.

He was a member of Red Oak Baptist Church in Buckingham (later Appomattox) County, preceded by Liberty Baptist, and likely the Wreck Island Baptist Church before. He represented the association as a messenger from Liberty Church to the Middle District Association Meeting held at Union Baptist Church in Buckingham County, Virginia on May 2, 1801.[1]

Notes

His birth date was seen by a descendant, Miss Ethel Marion Smith[2][3], in a copy of the St. Peter's Parish Register. The page(s) was (were) removed or disintegrated before C. G. Chamberlayne published his transcription in the 1930's according to his notes in the publication.[4]

Revolutionary War Service

SAR and DAR both list his as serving under Captain Samuel Jordan Cabell, and in Colonel Daniel Morgan's[5] Rifle Company. Evidence cheifly consists of payroll and muster lists which survive. Littleberry held the rank of Sergeant, and is often listed with his two peers Daniel Low and John Thomas. They served in the 6th Virginia Regiment, participating in the Battles of Trenton[6], Princeton[7], Brandywine[8], and Germantown.[9][10] From January of 1777, various units of the 6th Virginia Regiment separated, fighting various skirmishes in New Jersey during the Forage War.[11][12] Although they served under Col. Daniel Morgan at various times, it seems that they were not with him in the Saratoga Campaign because he left their command by April and returned after October.[13] Col. James Hendricks was their commander from April until September when he was reassigned to the 1st Virginia Regiment.[14] The record of Littleberry's service seems to have ended in February of 1778, therefore he probably wasn't present for the Battle of Monmouth[15] later that year.
