Ethel Lilian Paterson (married name Gray) was born on 30 January 1890 in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia, the daughter of Sarah Jane (Hutchinson) Paterson and Walter Paterson.^{[citation needed]}

She married John Gray in March 1914 at Scots Church in Melbourne, Victoria.^[1] Their children were:^{[citation needed]}
