Biography

James Paterson was born on 9 December 1833, he was baptized on 24 December 1833[1]. His parents are given as Lewis Paterson and Jane McKonach, and their residence as Eastfield. Eastfield (now known as Eastfield of Monaltrie) is a farmstead on the north bank of Ballater Burn about ½ mile southwest of Tullich[2]. Eastfield may have been attached to Monaltrie (formerly Ballater) House[3], built in 1782 under the direction of Francis Farquharson, 6th of Monaltrie.

James was enumerated in the 1841 Census[4]. He is recorded as aged 8 years along with his parents Lewis and Jane; and his siblings: Jane (aged 10 years), Isabel (aged 6 years), and William (aged 4 years).

Similarly he was enumerated in the 1851 Census still living in Eastfield[5]. Again he was recorded with his parents, his siblings Jane, Isabella, William and Eliza (aged 11 years), Lewis (aged 9 years) and the youngest child in the family Alexander (aged 6 years).

In the 1861 Census he is similarly enumerated with his parents, and siblings Isabella, Eliza, Louis (Lewis) and Alexander. His siblings Jane and William were not enumerated in the household. The family is now residing in New Groddie[6].

In the 1871 Census he is similarly enumerated with his parents, and siblings: Lizzie (Eliza), Ludovick (Lewis) and Alexander (and five servants) in a residence of 10 rooms and household of 11 persons in Groddie[7].

James Paterson (Farmer at Groddie, bachelor) and Isabella McConnach (Domestic Servant at Tomachar, spinster) were married 10 March 1891 at Tomachar, Logie-Coldstore by Alexander West, Free Church Minister Braes of Cromar[8]. The groom's parents are given as Lewis Paterson (Farmer- deceased), Jane Paterson ms. McConnach (deceased). The bride's parents as Charles McConnach (Blacksmith, deceased) and Isabella McConnach ms. McDonald. The witnesses were George McConnach and Charles McLean.

James and Isabella had two children whose births are registered:

  1. Isabella McDonald Paterson, born 13 February 1891 at Tomachar (Illegimate)[9]. Her parents are described as: James (farmer at Groddie) and Isabella (domestic servant at Tomachar).
  2. Jane Paterson born 10 July 1894 at Groddie, Logie-Coldstone[10].

Other children born to James and Isabella have not been located in the parishes of Logie, Coldstone & Cromar, or Glenmuick, Tullich & Glengairn

James died aged 84 years on 19 July 1917 at Mosstown, Braes of Cromar of chronic valvular disease of the heart, syncope. His son-in-law, William Kellas, was present when he died and was also the death informant[11].

Research Notes

What was recorded in the Parish registers and Census returns as Newgroddie or New Groddie is conjectured now to be known as Groddie[12]. Roy's "Great Map"[13] shows New Grogy (sic) and East Grogy (to the north-east). South of New Grogy is an unmarked stream which is conjectured to be present day Groggie Burn. It is conjectured that Old Groggie was located on this stream, as shown on the 1902 edition of the Six-inch to the mile maps[12].

Mosstown in the Braes of Cromar is immediately west of Newkirk [14] , a stream, Mosstown Burn, rises west of Logie and flows past Tomachar before it flow through Logie, Mosstown is on its south bank. The Free Kirk is shown south of the stream.
