Biography

Bryan Handley PATE was born 20 Nov 1821 in Patetown, Wayne, North Carolina (refer to Find A Grave: Memorial #110889067).^{[citation needed]}

The earliest record we find of Bryant Pate is the 1850 Wayne County census, where he is estimated age 27, living with his parents, Bryan H Pate and Zelpha or Zilphia and a rather large extended family.^[1]

The next record of Bryan H Pate shows his marriage to Sally Ann Perkins on 11 Nov 1854 in Wayne County.^[2] Sally A (Perkins) Pate appears within the Stony Creek, Wayne County 1860 household along with the children below noted.^[3]

• Jane Francis (Pate) Pate (1855–1913)^[3][4] who married Troy H Pate in 1871^[5]
• Angeline (Pate) Howell (1857–1942)^[3][4] who married Dewit Howell in 1871^[6]
• John B Henry Pate (1859–1935)^[3][4] who married Mary Crumpler on 16 Nov 1881,^[7] and later, Martha P Wiggs on 7 Dec 1887^[8]
• Sallie W (Pate) Montague (1861–1958)^[4][9]

On 10 Mar 1868, Bryant married Becky Peel, daughter of John Peel, in Wayne County.^[10] Beckey appears in the Goldsboro, Wayne County census record of 1870.^[4]

Lastly, B H Pate and Nancy Daniel were married 8 Oct 1872 in Wayne, North Carolina.^[11]

Research Notes

• Thomas JD Pate (1848–1903)^[1] is shown on Bryan H Pate's FindAGrave memorial as a son; whereas, he is present in the household of the senior Bryan and Zilphia, which indicates that he is either a brother OR that Bryan (II) had an as yet undocumented relationship or marriage prior to his first marriage.
• Previously, Zilphia Pate Holland (1871–1930), was described as a daughter; whereas, no evidence for this person exists. Instead, she was attached to the Bryan Handley Pate (II) FindAGrave memorial as a daughter [by Green Holland (ca. 1822-1886) and Elizabeth Barnes (ca. 1833-1895)], but clearly described in the narrative as a Holland daughter. Evidence on her living as a single Zilphia Holland through 1930 exists on FamilySearch AFN Zilpha Holland (1871–1930) L192-R8Z. At present, the update to FindAGrave is pending.
