Mem Fox is an Australian writer of children's books.
Mem (a name she has used since about age 13) was born Merrion Frances Partridge in Melbourne on 5 March 1946. Her parents were Nancy and Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge. Her parents moved the family to Zimbabwe as missionaries before Mem turned one.[1]
Mem Partridge studied drama at Rose Brufield College in London from 1965 to 1968. She married a fellow student in 1969. They moved to Adelaide in 1970, the town where her grandfather lived. She taught language arts to teacher education students at Flinders University for 24 years to 1996.[1]
She started writing childrens' books in 1983, with Possum Magic. Her second book was Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge in 1984. The title is her father's full name, but the story in the book is inspired by her grandfather (also Wilfrid Partridge) living an old people's home.[2]
Mem Fox was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours on 26 January 1993 in recognition of service to children's literature.[3]
