Alden was born in 1785. He was the son of Samuel Partridge and Elizabeth Wright. [1][2][3]
Alden Partridge and Ann Elizabeth Swasey were married before 1838. [3]
Alden died 17 Jan 1854, in Norwich, Vermont and was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Norwich, Vermont. [4][2]
Alden matriculated at Dartmouth in 1802, but transferred to and graduated from West Point in 1806, and remained as an instructor in engineering, and later appointed as Superintendent of West Point from 1806 to 1817. He then resigned his commission as Captain and left the Army under duress. He then founded the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy in Norwich, Vermont, which was renamed Norwich University in 1837. After retiring from the presidency of that institution, he engaged in establishing other schools around the country.
Captain Partridge also served as Surveyor-General of Vermont, and was chief of the the American contingent that, with a British counterpart, established the northeast boundary between the United States and what became the Dominion of Canada.
