Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Harriet (Parker) Stewart is a part of US Black heritage.

Harriet Ann Parker was born about 1836, probably in Dorchester County, Maryland in the United States of America. She was the daughter of Isaac and Juliet Parker.[1][2]

Harriett was married to Henry Ross who was enslaved in the beginning of their marriage. Their first two sons were born while they lived in Dorchester County, Maryland. In December 1854, they learned that Henry and two of his brothers were about to be sold. Their sister, famed Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman helped them escape to St. Catherines in Ontario, Canada. In early 1855, Harriet Tubman brought Harriet (Parker) Ross and her two sons to St. Catherines. Henry Ross took the name William Henry Stewart when he began his new life as a free man. Harriet and their children also took the surname Stewart.[1]

They lived together in St. Catharines and the surrounding township, Grantham, until at least the 1880's. They had the following children:[3][4][5]

  • William Stewart (born ~1853)
  • John Stewart (born ~1857)
  • Caroline Stewart (born ~1858)
  • Julia Stewart (born ~1864)
  • Mary Stewart (born 1860 or 1866)
  • Amanda E Stewart (born ~1868)
  • Martha M Stewart (born ~1872)
  • Allice Stewart (born ~1876)
  • Gertrude Stewart (born ~1879)

Harriet and William seem to have separated because by 1900, William had moved to Fleming, New York in the USA and was living with his sister.[6] Harriet died on 27 Dec 1916 in the Township of Grantham in Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines.[7]
