Biography

Birth about 1560 Lindley

Isabel was born about 1560 the daughter of Francis Palmes of Lindley by Otley, Yorkshire. Her parents were Francis Palmes and his wife Margaret Corbet. The Palmes of Lindley were cousins of the Palmes of Naburn next door to Moreby Hall, so she and her future husband John Acklom of Moreby were probably well known to each other before marriage.

Marriage about 1580

John married Isabella daughter of Francis Palmes of Lindley near Otley, the cousin of the Ackloms near neighbours, the Palmes of Naburn. this is attested in a Heraldic Visitation of York during the lifetime of the couple. ^[1] So far no confirmation or dating of this marriage has been found outside the Visitation.

Memorial

There is a particularly splendid marble and alabaster monument to John Acclome, and at least by implication Isabel Palmes, in Stillingfleet church. ^[2] The tomb seems to refer to Isabel/Isabella as Elizabeth, confusing for us, but not necessarily at the time as Isabella was regarded as a version ot Elisabeth.
