Biography

Gershom Palmer was the second child of Ann Denison & Gershom Palmer. According to the Palmer Groups reference source Gershom was born in 1672.

Note: This Gershom Palmer and his brother Ichabod Palmer both were baptized in Stonington, Connecticut, on 9 (not 2) September 1677 ^[1]. Though Ichabod and Gershom are often said to have been twins (possibly as an extrapolation from their coincident baptismal date), there is no reason to suppose that they were twins. It was not particularly unusual for several siblings of various ages to be baptized at the same time. The record of the boys' baptisms by Rev. James Noyes, minister of the Stonington church from 1674 to 1719, fails to identify them as twins. In contrast, Rev. Noyes's baptisms of Elihu and Elisha Chesebrough (1694) and of Josiah and Joseph Witter (1698), are recorded such as to explicitly identify both pairs as twins (Richard Anson Wheeler, History of the First Congregational Church, Stonington, Conn., 1674–1874 [Norwich, Conn., 1875], 195, 199, 201).[2]

Gershom Palmer married, probably in Saybrook, Conn., about 1698, SARAH FENNER, daughter of Capt. John and Sarah (Clarke) Fenner of Saybrook ^[2]. They had three known children (ibid., 122), all born at Killingworth, Connecticut:

2. John Palmer, b. 1705; m. Mary Ward, January 15, 1729/30; d. Dover, Dutchess County, New York
3. Hannah Palmer, b. Abt 1707; m. Starkie

"Capt." Gershom Palmer died in Killingworth (that part now Clinton), Connecticut, 2 March 1727, per his gravestone aged "about 55 years", thus confirming his birth year as 1672. His grave is in Indian River Cemetery, Clinton, Connecticut:Find A Grave: Memorial #30494455
