Margaret Muriel Palmer was born to Edwin James Palmer and Bessie Turner in Algona and graduated from Algona High School in 1939. She met Gail O. Hakes during Christmas of that year and were married on July 4, 1940. They were married by Rev. C. N. Pfeiffer and attended by Katherine Palmer, Margaret's sister, and D. C. Davidson, fiend of Gail. From that union, eight children were born. In 1946, the family moved to a farm south of Clear Lake. Margaret was a helpful partner with Gail in farming for several years. The couple left farming in the spring of 1959 and purchased Allen's Tire Shop south of Clear Lake. Margaret assisted Gail with that business in any way she could. She was a good mother to her children. While on the farm Margaret made Tuesday's very special by baking homemade bread and cinnamon rolls for after school treats. She loved the old-time dancing music and often moved the furniture to have room to teach her children the two-step, polka and waltz. She was a fun-loving grandmother to her grandchildren, known by them as "Gram B." Margaret worked for several years as a prep cook, baker and pie maker at the Truck Stop, The Pantry, and Martha's, all in Clear Lake, and the Muskie Lounge in Ventura. Margaret was a past president of the VFW Auxiliary Post 4868; she was an avid reader, and also enjoyed music, television, and her family and grandchildren. Margaret also participated in the Christian Women's Club in Clear Lake.
