John was born say 1675.The date is estimated from the birth of his wife and the assumption that he was a few years older than her. His parentage remains unknown. He was in the Province of Carolina by 1707, when he received a grant of land in Colleton County. At his death, he owned at least five plantations and 68 slaves.[1]
His military career was historically important for the South Carolina colony. He was an Indian fighter in 1715 and in August 1727 was appointed commander of an expedition against the Yemasee Indians near St. Augustine.[1]
He married Elizabeth Bellinger before 1712, probably in South Carolina.[2]
John Palmer of Colleton County wrote his will on 15 September 1737, but it was not proved until 17 December 1744. He names his wife Elizabeth, sons William, Richard, Edmund, and Evans Palmer, daughter Hannah Deveau, and daughters Elizabeth and Lucia Palmer. [3]
