NOTE: John Hopkins Palmer (1833-1883) is not the son of Samuel Palmer and Ann (Avery) Palmer, and his profile has now been detached from them to avoid further confusion. There are many private and public trees on Ancestry showing his connection to Samuel Palmer and Ann (Avery) Palmer but it is definitely incorrect, as clarified below in the Research Notes. Work is ongoing in an attempt to find his true parents.
NOTE: It is not known where the Hopkins middle name came from. Perhaps it was his mother's maiden name.
Possible New Information: May have arrived in New York in 1851. John Palmer age 18, Birthdate abt 1833, ship Winfield Scott. John may have immigrated, arriving on 8 November 1851 in New York, New York, United States. [1]

From a search on FreeReg.org.uk there were 17 baptisms named John Palmer between 1 January 1833 and 31 December 1833 across the whole of the UK (16 in England and 1 in Wales). There are middle names for 5 of these baptisms but there were no baptisms for John Hopkins Palmer. Perhaps he adopted his mother's maiden name as a middle name at a later stage. Of course, these are only the records that have been transcribed into FreeReg so far, so no doubt there are more possibilities.
My proposed strategy is to create WikiTree profiles for the most feasible of these 17 possibilities (i.e. start with the dates closest to the birth of JHP and ignore the 5 with middle names) and add their parents, to see if the name Hopkins turns up and to see what comes up in census records. It would be helpful to know if the given date for John Hopkins Palmer is certain, and/or whether it is a birth or baptism date, as that knowledge would permit the list of 17 to be culled even further before starting this task. I will provide links below to the profiles that are created through this process to inform any other researchers trying to find the parents of John Hopkins Palmer. Hood-4815 03:26, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
