Sir Arthur Palmer KCMG was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for fifteen years, the Legislative Council for seventeen years, and the premier of Queensland for almost four years.

Arthur Hunter Palmer was born on the 28th of December 1819 in County Armagh, Ireland, the son of Lieutenant Arthur Palmer, RN, and his wife, Emily née Hunter. He was educated at Youghal Grammar School and a private tutor in Dublin.[1]

Palmer emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales, Australia, in 1838, arriving at Sydney, on the City of Edinburgh.

Palmer worked for many years on New England stations, eventually becoming general manager of all Henry Cary Dangar's holdings.

Arthur Palmer married Cecilia Mosman on the 8th of June 1865, at Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales.[2]

They had four daughters and three sons.[1]

He moved to Queensland and took up a pastoral run in the Belyando River valley which he called Beaufort Station, and also began acting as a magistrate.

In 1866, Palmer was elected to Parliament as member for Port Curtis in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. On the 3rd of May 1870, he became Premier of Queensland and Colonial Secretary, being defeated on the 6th of January 1874. He resigned from the Assembly on the 24th of December 1881 to become President of the Queensland Legislative Council. He remained in that position until his death

Arthur was created Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George KCMG) in 1881 for services to the Queensland parliament.[1]

Sir Arthur Hunter Palmer died on the 20th of March 1898, at his home Easton Gray at Toowong in the Colony of Queensland and is buried in Brisbane General Cemetery, Toowong.[3]

The Palmer River goldfield was named by James Venture Mulligan, after Arthur Palmer.
