Biography

Son of Sir Robert Palk Bart.,, Governor of Madras in India, and his wife, Anne Vansittart, Lawrence Palk was born there about 1766.[1] The next year his father returned to England for good. [2]Lawrence attended Harrow and Christ Church College, Oxford before completing his education touring in Europe. [1]

He was first returned to Parliament as member for Ashburton in 1787 at a by-election to replace his father who had vacated his seat. [3]

On the 7th of August 1789 at St George, Hanover Square he married Lady Mary Bligh, [4] daughter of John Bligh, Earl of Darnley [1] and his wife, Mary Stoyte. She bore him a son, who was to die in Lawrence's lifetime, before her own death on the 4th of March 1791. [1]

Lawrence married Dorothy Elizabeth Vaughan, [5] daughter of Wilmot Vaughan, Earl of Lisburne and his Countess, Dorothy Shafto, on the 15th of May 1792. [1] They were parents of six sons and two daughters. [1]

He had taken Ashburton again in 1790 and was re-elected in 1796 but gave up the seat in order to sit for Devon. [6]

His father died on the 29th of April 1798 whereupon Lawrence succeeded to the Baronetage as the second Baronet Palk of Haldon House. [1]

Early in his thirties he had become a victim of gout which by 1809 had reduced him to a cripple. Lawrence died on the 20th of June 1813. [1]

Palk-117 and Palk-27 are not ready to be merged because: Clearly meant to be the same person. However the wives do not match. More research needed
