Biography

Cross of St George
Anthony Paine was born in England.

Anthony Paine was born about 1536, probably at Hengrave as his father William had been the Bailiff for Sir Thomas Kitson. Anthony's birth record does not survive, it is based on the birth of his first child in 1558. Anthony was given the Manor of Nowton by his brother Henry who died childless in 1568. Anthony played a prominent role in the town of Bury St. Edmunds, being on of 24 men who served as Feoffees for the town. Anthony sent at least one son the Caius College. He died in 1606 leaving the Manor of Nowton to his grandson Anthony. Anthony sold the manor to his Uncle William for 3000 pounds in 1607. Martha died in 1603, both her and Anthony were buried in the chancel at Nowton. [1][2]
