Chris Oxley was born in Queensland, Australia

Christian Sarah Mary 'Chris' Oxley was born on 7th June 1912 in Charters Towers, Queensland, Australia. She was the daughter of Richard Oxley and Christian Leach. [1]

Chris became a nurse.

Chris Oxley is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Second Australian Imperial Force 1941-1946
2/10th Australian General Hospital
On 17th January 1941 Chris was commissioned as a nurse into the Australian Army Nursing Service and attached to the 2/10th Australian General Hospital, then based in Malaya. [2] Along with 64 other Australian nurses and many civilians, including women and children, Chris was evacuated from Singapore on 12th February aboard the ill-fated Vyner Brooke. The ship was discovered by the Japanese as it was entering the Bangka Strait two days later, bombed and strafed repeatedly, and sank in twenty minutes. [3]

Chris Oxley was a prisoner of war of the Japanese during the Second World War.

She became a prisoner of war of the Japanese. Upon liberation and rehabilitation to Australia, Chris was discharged on 27th March 1946. She was Mentioned in Despatches in 1947. [4]

Chris' name appears on the Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial, Ballarat, Victoria and on the Vyner Brooke Tragedy Memorial, Bicton, Western Australia. [5]
