Eli was born about 1840 to Humphrey Owen and an unknown mother.
Young Eli experienced a great deal of tragedy in his life. Five younger brothers perished in a house fire, another brother died from being kicked by a horse, and a sister died of burns sustained when her clothing caught fire at a sugar camp.[1]
In 1862, he enlisted in Company H, 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and died in service February 2, 1864.
