Alfred Mitchell was born in 1845. He was the son of Robert Osborn and Dinah Mitchell.
In the 1850 census Alfred (age 6) was in Williston, Chittenden, Vermont, United States with his parents and siblings.[1]
Alfred served in the Union Army during the Civil War with Company D of the 10th Vermont volunteers. He was wounded in the Battle of Cold Harbor in 1864.
In the 1880 census Alfred (age 35), Farm laborer, was the married head of household in Williston, Chittenden, Vermont, United States. With wife Louisa, 4 children.[3]
In the 1900 census Mitchell, Day Laborer, was the married head of household in Williston, Chittenden, Vermont. With wife Louise, one son.[4]
Alfred died on 18 October 1910 and was buried in East Cemetery, Williston, Chittenden County, Vermont, United States.[5][6]

Alfred's race was listed as mulatto or black in 1850 and 1880, but as white in 1870 and 1900. In 1850 his father was listed as white and his mother as mulatto. His wife Louisa was white.
