Joseph Orme, son of Samuel Orme and Elizabeth Riley, was born in Denby, Derbyshire, England in about 1821-1822.

Joseph and Emily Green married by banns in Denby on 9 September 1845. Joseph was a 23-year-old collier, Emily was 19. Witnesses were Richard Orme and Elizabeth Orme.[1][2][3] Their first child was born in October 1842. The couple went on to have 13 children, six died in infancy; five lived to adulthood, married, and had children.

Joseph, Emily, and six of their children immigrated to the United States in 1863 aboard the ship Amazon departing 2 June 1863 in the care of George Quayle Cannon, licensed passenger broker for the church. The family paid ₤35 s4 at Islington, Liverpool for a Contract Ticket.[4]

The crossed the plains by ox team. Four of their children died en route to Zion. It is unknown which immigrant company they travel with in 1863. The family farmed in Box Elder County, where they lived the rest of their lives.

From the evidence we have, I think it is probable that Joseph was born on 4 March 1822. My reasoning is a follows:

• The baptism record could relate to a different Joseph Orme. I have not been able to see the source document but the transcriptions do not specifically mention Denby as Joseph's place of residence. Denby was in the Belper district according to https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/2353, so the record could be correct but the 7 year variance in birth date must cause us to question it.

• In the 1941 Census, it appears as though the adults ages have been rounded but the children (including Joseph, age 19) have not. Therefore, according to this data, on 6 June 1841, Joseph was 19. His birth year was therefore 1821-1822.

• At his marriage on 9 September 1845, his age was given as 23. This again gives a birth year of 1821-1822.

• Later records are not consistent, but all give an earlier birth year. This could be explained by a, not uncommon, tendency to exaggerate his age.

• The death certificate gives his age as 85 on 29 April 1904, giving a birth year of 1818-1819. The Find a Grave record gives his birth date as 4 March 1819.

• If the burial record is correct in recording his birthday as 4 March, then according to the death records he was born in 1819. However according to the 1841 Census and his marriage record his birth year would have been 1822.

• Unfortunately, with the evidence we have, we cannot be certain, but I suggest that it is probable that the 1841 Census and the marriage record are the most likely to be correct. I conclude that Joseph was probably born on 4 March 1822.

At this time, I have been unable to find any further sources to verify or disprove this theory.
