Former Premier of South Australia (1996-2001), former senator, chairman of the Adelaide Football Club
John Wayne Olsen was born on 7 June 1945 at Kadina in South Australia, the son of Stanley John Olsen and Joyce Rosalind (nee Heath).
OLSEN — On June 7, at Koonawarra Private Hospital, Kadina, to Mr. and Mrs. Stan Olsen — a son (John Wayne). Thanking Dr. Raises, Sister Spry and nursing staff.[1]
Olsen married Julie Abbott in 1968, with whom he had two sons and a daughter.[2]
He was an alderman in the District Counci of Kadina 14 May 1971 – 2 July 1977, including as mayor from 6 July 1974.[2]
He was elected to state parliament on 15 September 1979 until 6 May 1990.[2]
He was a Senator for South Australia 1990–92 before returning to state politics as member for Kavel 9 May 1992 – 9 February 2002. He was was Premier of South Australia between 28 November 1996 and 22 October 2001, as the leader of the Liberal Party of Australia. [2]
He was created an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2007 Australia Day honours "For service to the South Australian Parliament, particularly in the areas of economic development and reform, and through promoting business, infrastructure and investment opportunities; to international relations; and to the community."[3]
