Richard Olney Jr. was born the son of Richard Olney and Sibella Leland. His dad died when he was very young, and he was raised by his mother and step-father, John Ballou. John adopted Richard and made him his heir. He grew up to be "a very worthy and enterprising" man. He went into successful trade in Burrillville, and later in Providence, R. I., accumulated a handsome property, and finally settled in Oxford, Mass., where he became an influential citizen. He is the grandfather of U.S. Secretary of State and Presidential Candidate Richard Olney
