Hester Magdalena was born in 1872 in Aliwal North. She was the daughter of Gert Frans Olivier and Susanna Francina de Wet.

In 1890 the two 17 year olds, Diederik Johannes van Pletzen, who farmed at Harmsfontein near Burgersdorp, and Hester Magdalena Olivier of Lemoenkloof, Aliwal North, were married, with their parent's permission, in the NG Church in Aliwal North. There were twelve children born of this marriage.^[1]
