He was NOT the son of William Odeon d: 1662 whose sons moved to Beaufort, North Carolina where their surname was spelled as Odeon or Oden.
In 1665 Richard Odom emigrated to Virginia. [1]
The 1704 tax list in Nansemond County, Virginia included Richard Odom.
By 1713 he had moved his family from Nansemond County, Virginia to Chowan County, North Carolina where he appeared in court records on 07 Apr 1713 and 30 Jul 1725. [2] [3]
He acquired several tracts of land, including 200 acres on the River Pocosin.
In 1725 Richard Odom owned land next to those sold by William Hughes to Joseph Vann in Gates County. [4]
From his will, he know that, at the time of his death, his wife's name was Anne. Her surname is unknown, and it also isn't known if she was his only wife or perhaps his second wife.
Children:
In his will, Richard mentions that Jacob and Aaron are his two youngest sons. See Research Notes below with regard to a record that may belong to Richard that would indicate that Aaron was a minor at the time of his father's death.
Richard Odom named his wife and known children in his last will on 12 Aug 1727; it was proved on 12 Jan 1727/28 in Chowan County, North Carolina [5] [6] Family mentioned included:
Richard's will passed probate on 24 January 1728 in Chowan County, North Carolina.[8]
Excerpt of Will: Sons: Richard and John, Abraham, Jacob and Aron (to each is given a plantation). Daughters: Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth and Jane Odum. Wife: Anne. Executors: Richard and Abraham Odum (sons). Witnesses: Edward Warren, Edward Vann, James Brady and Richard Taylor. Proven before C. Gale, C. J.
Various published resources for this area of North Carolina contain numerous records on the sons of this Richard.
His son Abraham was devised land on Cutawitsky Creek, a tributary of the Meherrin River, [9] and Abraham sold this land to Walter Brown on 14 May 1735. [10] and relocated to land on Beech Creek and Swift Creek of the Tar River. The creeks are located northwest of present-day Tarboro, North Carolina and became part of Edgecombe County.
On 21 Mar 1729/30, Abraham Odom and John Odom, executors of the will of Richard Odom, filed a complaint on behalf of Aaron Odom, a minor, against John Hilton and Joseph Vann in Chowan, North Carolina.[11][12] Are these sons of this Richard, or of his son Richard? If of this one, note that Aaron was a minor in 1730 and, as such, was likely the son of a second wife.
