Biography

Martha Ann Odom was born on November 1, 1779, in Barnwell, South Carolina, to Julia Walker, age 16, and Benjamin Wellington Odom, age 20.

She married Darling Peeples on March 29, 1796, in her hometown. They had ten children in 20 years.

She died on September 10, 1843, in Barnwell, South Carolina, at the age of 63, and was buried in Barnwell, South Carolina, in the Peeples Cemetery.

Mrs Martha Peeples, Wife of the Rev. Darling Peeples who was born in Barnwell District, S.C. on the 1st Nov. 1779 and Died on the 10th Sept 1843. Aged 63 Years, 10 Months, 10 Days

"Possessed of an Excellent Mind, Great Fortitude, and Kindness of Heart. The Deceased Well Fulfilled All the Duties of Life Which Come Within the Sphere of Woman. She was The Mother of Ten Children. To Whom She Was Devotedly Attached. All of Whom Except Two It Was Her Hard Fate to See Carried To the Grave. The Bodies of Seven of Them Repose Near Her Own. As A Wife, A Mother, and A Friend, She Has Left An Example Worthy of The Highest Respect And Emulation. Her Hand Was Always Extended For The Relief of The Poor. And Her Heart Ever Sympathized With The Sufferings Of The Distressed. Long Will the Remembrance of The Many Virtues That Adorned Her Character Be Cherished With The Deepest Affection"
