Biography

Miles was a Friend (Quaker)

Given the fact that Miles had children born before 1660, he was born about 1635. [citation needed]

According to the Burial records of the Knaresborough Monthly Meeting, Miles was married to Alice [unknown birth surname].[1]

Miles Oddy, and Alice, his wife, aligned their religious beliefs with that of the persecuted people called Quakers. According to Volume II of A Collection of the Sufferings of the People Called Quakers, Miles Oddy was among the list of 229 persons in 1660 within the West Riding who were committed to prison. The author stated: "In the West-riding of this County [Yorkshire], the Numbers committed to Prison in the Eleventh and Twelfth months, for refusing to take the Oath, was also very great, being taken, many from their peaceable Meetings, some on the Highway, others from their own Houses and lawful Employments, and some out of their Beds."[2]

He was also recorded in the records of the Knaresborough Monthly Meeting as early as 1660 as a witness to the marriage of John Spence and Mary Freeman. A marriage in 1671 was recorded at the house of Miles Oddy in Netherdale. The children of Miles Oddy appear to have been born before he joined the Friends since the birth records of Knaresborough were recorded as early as 1653, and no children are recorded for Miles.
