Sybil Nevett Ochiltree was born in 1889 in Victoria (Australia). She was the daughter of Edward Ochiltree and Laura Mitchell. [1]
Sybil married young Army Captain, John Lavarack, on 10th October 1912 in St Matthew's Church of England (now Anglican), Queenscliff, Victoria. [2] Soon afterward, the young couple sailed to England, where John attended a two-year course at Staff College, Camberley, Surrey. Of course, the (First World) War was declared whilst they were in England, so Sybil remained for the course of the war. Whilst in England, they had two sons. John would later climb all the way to Lieutenant General in the Australian Army and be appointed Governor of Queensland from 1946 to 1956 – the first Queensland-born Governor of Queensland and the longest-serving. When he was knighted, Sybil became entitled as Lady Lavarack.
Widowed in 1957, Lady Lavarack passed away on 22nd December 1974 in Buderim, Queensland. [3]
