Notables Project
Eddie Oatman is Notable.

Eddie was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was among the top goal scorers of his time and he had a career that spanned 30+ years in professional hockey. His brother Russell also played professional ice hockey.

Early Life

Eddie, the son of Arthur "Archie" Oatman and Frances "Frankie" Smith,[1] was born in Norwich Township, Oxford, Ontario, Canada on 10 Jun 1889.[2] In 1891, their family lived in St. Thomas, Ontario.[3] In 1901, they were living in Tillsonburg, Ontario where his father worked as a bar clerk.[4]

Hockey career

He had a long and successful professional hockey career between 1909 and 1935; later serving as a head coach. He was named an all-star for ten consecutive seasons by the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA). He was a star with the Quebec Bulldogs when it won the 1912 Stanley Cup. He was a successful coach and captain of five different hockey teams.[5][6]

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) on 1 Nov 1916 and served with the 228th Battalion who had secured a franchise in the NHA for the 1916–17 season. But when the 228th was sent to Europe for military action in the First World War, he was discharged for special circumstances.[5][7][8] His discharge papers (on 14 Feb 1917) described the reason for his discharge as: "not likely to become an efficient soldier".[9]

Family Life

He married Helen Durning on 30 Mar 1921 in New Westminster, British Columbia.[1][10] They lived in Victoria, British Columbia where Eddie worked as a salesman.[11]

They had a son, Edward Durning Oatman, born in Minnesota on 22 Apr 1924.[12]

They moved to Canada in 1925 or 1926 and lived at 711 Ninth Street West in Calgary, Alberta with their son, Edward (Ted) and Helen's mother, Jane.[13][14] In 1940, they were living in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Eddie worked as a hockey coach.[15]

Death

Eddie died in Hennepin County, Minnesota on 5 Nov 1973.[16] He was buried in the Springford Cemetery in Springford, Ontario.[17]
