Patrick O'Shaugnessy was the father of Patrick O'Shaughnessy, who was a "native of Galway, Ireland." [1] Therefore, Patrick senior was presumably born somewhere in County Galway, possibly about 1785. [2]
Patrick married Mary (Keneally) O'Shaughnessy [3] [4] sometime before 1809. [2]
At least four children were the fruit of their union:
Patrick died on an unknown date, probably in County Galway, Ireland.
Although various Ancestry family trees and other secondary sources (Find A Grave, Geneanet) or late-recorded information (headstone inscriptions for Patrick junior and Peter, death record for Peter) claim that most of the children were born in Athenry (town or parish?), the actual location of the family in County Galway, Ireland remains challenging to confirm.
Between 1826 and 1828 (with one outlier in 1841), sixteen people named Patrick Shaughnessy occupied land in County Galway in six different parishes (but not in Athenry Parish). [5] These Patricks lived in the following townlands and parishes:
No one named Patrick O'Shaughnessy was listed in County Galway, athough one entry did not list a forename: [6]
Unless the Tithe Applotment books are incomplete or Patrick was not a tenant farmer, other lessee or landowner, it seems likely that the family lived in one of the above townlands and parishes, rather than the town or parish of Athenry. (One Ancestry commenter suggested the Kilbeacanty (Parish) was the possible homeland of Patrick Shaughnessy, but no source was provided.)
RootsIreland holds four marriage records for a Patrick Shaughnessy between 1802 and 1810 but none match his spouse Mary Keneally or Connelly. However, marriage records from the early 1800's are missing for many parishes.
One other older child, Margaret (Norah) ) Shaughnessy (c1809-1860 or 1875), is often attributed as an issue of Patrick O'Shaughnessy and Mary Kenealley on various Ancestry family trees. Although she was probably born in Ireland and married James Gallagher and raised a family in the Liverpool, England area, no records have been found to confirm her parentage.
If Patrick was still alive in about 1856, he could have been one of the 22 occupiers named Patrick Shaughnessy listed for County Galway in fourteen different parishes, according to Griffith's Valuation, including three in Athenry Parish in these townlands:
Some Ancestry trees assign a death of 1855 but provide no source. No burial/death records for Patrick Shaughnessy are available on the RootsIreland database before 1865. The one record available that roughly matches the timeframe of his life is:
The Civil Records record that death and many others for a Patrick Shaughnessy beginning in 1864 but images are not available for the earliest deaths and many took place in counties other than Galway such as County Limerick.
