Biography

Cornelius O'Leary has Irish ancestors.

Cornelius was the son of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary. The Great Chicago Fire started in the family's barn behind 137 DeKoven Street.

In 1880, he was a prisoner at the House of Correction in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.[1]

Around 1883, Kate Snyder (also known as Kate Campbell) gave birth to a child that was said to have been fathered by Cornelius. The child died in infancy.[2]

On 23 August 1885 in Lake, Cook County, Illinois, Cornelius shot Kate Snyder and his sister Mary (O'Leary) Scully.[3] Kate died, and Mary was taken to the County Hospital in Chicago,[4] where she died on 24 August 1885.[5] On 22 September 1885, Cornelius was captured in Kansas City.[6] He was brought back to Chicago on 27 September 1885.[7][8] He claimed not to know anything about the murder.[9] On 24 December 1885, he pleaded guilty to double murder.[10] He was sentenced to forty years in prison,[11][12] which could be reduced to twenty years on good behavior.[13] He was taken to the penitentiary in Joliet, Will County, Illinois on 7 January 1886.[14] He was taken to an insane asylum[15][16] on 2 December 1889.[17]
