Biography

James was born in 1772 per a secondary source with definite inaccuracies regarding his family. He was the son of Bryan Nowlin and Lucy Wade. He was named in the will of his father dated 11th December 1806 and the division of his father's estate, submitted to the Court 15th November 1813.

He was married in Pittsylvania County, Virginia by bond dated 13th December 1792 to Lurana Marlow, mis-transcribed as Nancy from the original Pittsylvania marriage books. The consent for her marriage was given by her step-father James Downing. This is further proven by a 30th September 1806 "Deed of Gift" from James Downing and Mary his wife, naming Mary as formerly Mary Marlow, and James' wife Lurana as her daughter. Additional records indicate Downing had married her mother by bond dated 28th June 1785 in Pittsylvania County.

The will of James Nowlin was dated 6th December 1813 naming his wife Raney, one daughter, four sons, and his brother Samuel as an executor with his widow Raney. He passed away before 16th July 1821 when his will was proved in Pittsylvania County. He was father to the following children:

1. James wife was not a Downey. She was Lurana Marlow, step-daughter of James Downing.
2. James will named his four sons. There was no "Samuel Henry" among them.
