Samuel, the only child of James Northam, was from Hadley, Massachusetts.He later lived at Hatfield, Mass., from 1674-1682, then at Dearfield, Mass, from whence he moved to Colchester, Connecticut. Along with Nathaniel Foot, Samuel was one of the original proprietors of Colchester. He was a townsman of Colchester, elected 13 Dec 1709.
The town was originally "incorporated into New London Co. on May 11,1699. Its north boundary is the Twenty Mile River. The south boundary is on the northern side of Lyme. The west boundary joins the east bounds of Middletown and Haddam. The east and northwest boundary run to the bounds of Lebanon and Norwich. The town was originally part of Hartford Co., October 13, 1998 application was made by Michael Taintor, Samuel Northam and Nathanial Foote and the land was transferred to New London and received its name Colchester."
In 1674, when Samuel was 24 years of age, he married Mary Dickinson.Their children were born in Hatfield, Mass. By occupation, Samuel was a carpenter. Samuel died at Colchester in 1726 at the age of about 76 years.
They had the following children: Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, Jonathan, John,and Ebenezer.
