Biography

Frederick North was a descendent of Roger North (1653-1734), the youngest son of Dudley North 4th Baron North (abt.1602-1677). He was the Mayor and MP for Hastings and Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk. He married the widowed Janet Shuttleworth, daughter of Sir John Marjoribanks, 1st Baronet Lees of County Berwick and their daughter was the botanical artist, Marianne North (1830-1890).

Family Life

Frederick North was born on 2 July 1800 and baptised in Hastings, Sussex on 28 July 1800; he was the son of Francis Frederic North of Hastings and Rougham Hall in Norfolk and his wife Elizabeth Whitear, the daughter of the Reverend William Whitear, Prebend of Chichester. [1][2]

Frederick North (of Hastings) married Janet (Marjoribanks) ShuttleworthJ, the widow of Robert Shuttleworth and daughter of Sir John Marjoribanks by license in Rushall, Wiltshire on 16 June 1825; their witnesses were John Marjoribanks Bart. of Lees, Edward Poone[?] Bart. and Francis Poone[?][3]

Frederick and Janet's children were:

  1. Charles North (1828-1906)
  2. Marianne North (1830-1890)
  3. Frederick North (bef.1833-bef.1834)
  4. Janet Catherine (North) Symonds (1837-bef.1913)

Frederick had property in Rougham, Norfolk, Hastings and London. The manor of Rougham Hall had been demolished by Fountain North, Frederick's Grandfather, however Frederick spent his vacations at Rougham while he was at Cambridge and grew to like the area. According to his daughter, Marianne, the family divided their time:[4]

spending the winter in Hastings, the spring in London, and dividing the summers between my half sister's old hall in Lancashire and a farmhouse at Rougham.

Frederick travelled extensively with his family on the continent and toured Europe with Marianne after the death of his wife.[5]

In 1834, his brother-in-law William Marjoribanks died and he became ward for William's sonJohn Marjoribanks, the young Baronet, and presumably his sister too. He was responsible for John's property at Berwick and would visit there to look after it.[6]

He became sick in Austria and died in Hastings on 29 October 1869; his death (age 69) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1869 in the Hastings district.[7][8]

Frederick was succeeded by his son Charles North.

Education and Career

Frederick North was educated at Harrow, where he was Captain of the school,[9] and Cambridge (B.A. 1822 M.A. 1827). He was admitted at the Inner Temple on 20 September 1821.[2] [10]

He was Mayor of Hastings 1826, 1828 and 1830[11] and Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for Norfolk.[2]

In 1831 he was one of the two Members of Parilaiment elected to represent the constituency of Hastings. He lost his seat on 1837, was re-elected mid-term on 10 May 1854 and held the seat until 1865. He was re-elected in 1868:

Hastings: 1831 - 1837
Hastings: 10 May 1854 - 1865
Hastings: 1868 - 29 October 1869
