Biography

Notables Project
Henry Norman GCB GCMG is Notable.

Field Marshal Sir Henry Norman GCB GCMG CIE was a senior Indian Army officer and colonial administrator. He served in the Second Anglo-Sikh War, the campaign against the Kohat Pass Afridis, the suppression of the Santhal rebellion, and the suppression of the Indian Mutiny. He became military member of the Viceroy's Council (in effect Minister for War in India) in 1870, in which role he maintained the policy of ensuring that the Indian Army were less well armed than British troops there to deter another mutiny. As a result, he became a member of the Council of India; and in his later years he became Governor of Jamaica and then Governor of Queensland.

Henry Wylie Norman was born on 2nd December 1826, one of two sons (his brother was Francis Booth Norman) of James Norman, a merchant who had conducted most of his business in Cuba before moving to Calcutta, and his wife Charlotte Norman (née Wylie). He was christened on 11th January 1827.[1] Young Norman joined the family firm in Calcutta in 1842 and then set about persuading his father to let him join the Bengal Army. Firstly obtaining a cadetship in the Bengal Native Infantry, Norman was then commissioned as an ensign in the 1st Bengal Native Infantry on 1st March 1844.

He married 21-year old Selina Davidson on 14th April 1853 in Peshawar, Bengal, India.[2] They had three daughters: Mary, Hellen and Annie. Selina passed away in 1862.

He married a second time, to widow Jemima Temple nee Knowles, on 29th September 1864 at Simla, Bengal.[3] She passed away the following year.

A third marriage was to Alice Sandys, daughter of Teignmouth Sandys of the Bengal Civil Service, on 1st March 1870 at Bhaugulpore, Bengal.[4] They had two sons and a daughter.

He was advanced to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) on 24th May 1873, promoted to Lieutenant General on 1st October 1877 and returned to London to become a member of the Council of India in February 1878.

In 1883 Norman was appointed Governor of Jamaica. After six years, he was appointed seventh Governor of Queensland, Australia, succeeding Sir Anthony Musgrave who had died at the post. In 1893, he became Viceroy for India, for 4 days, before declining the post. In 1896, he was especially appointed as a commissioner to enquire into the conditions and prospects of the West India sugar-growing colonies. In 1901, he became governor of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. Having been promoted to Field Marshal on 26th June 1902, he was appointed as a commissioner to inquire into the military preparations for the Second Boer War in September 1902.

He passed away on 26th October 1904 in the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London, England, and was buried in Brompton Cemetery, England.[5]

Probate was granted on 29 November to his wife, for 11,574 pounds.
