Obituary to Harriet (Gill) Noel, 2nd wife of Sir Gerard Noel, died on 11 August 1826. ("Morning Post, Monday 4 September 1826 ) Gerard gave her a splendid funeral.
The funeral of Lady Noel took place on Thursday night, by torch-light, in the Church of Exton, Lincolnshire. The body had lain in state for the last three days, and the public were admitted to a view. The funeral decorations of the hall and church were of the most magnificent description. An ante- chamber, the gallery (one hundred feet long), the dining room, and the spacious ball room, were hung and carpeted with black cloth, and lighted up with about one hundred large sinumbra lamps. The body lay in the ball room, under a canopy of state. The coffin was covered with rich crimson velvet and gold furniture. On the plate is the following inscription : — Harriet, the second wife of Sir Gerard Noel, Baronet, lineally descended by her father, the Rev. Joseph Gill, from the Duke of Wharton. Born 24h July, 1785; died 9th August, 1826; in the 42d year of her age. This room was lighted by two immense chandeliers, each weighing half a ton. They are the richest and most splendid things of the kind we have seen. Each contains 20 sinumbra lamps, and the massive burnished gold work of which they are composed contrasted beautifully with the still light the lamps threw around. Behind the canopy the hatchment and banners were displayed, and the whole produced much effect. The procession from the Hall to the Church was a walking one, the tenantry bearing 100 lighted torches. In the Church another canopy was erected over the vault, and at that part of the funeral service where the Clergyman consigns the dead to the earth, the coffin was gradually lowered by means of concealed machinery, to take its place amongst the ancestors of the House of Noel."
