Joseph Niepce, né le 7 mars 1765, est le fils de Claude Niepce, avocat à la Cour, conseiller du roi, et de Claude Barrault. Il a été baptisé le 8 mars suivant dans la paroisse Saint-Jean-de-Maizel à Châlon-sur-Saône, avec pour parrain Joseph Betauld avocat à la Cour demeurant à Beaune, et pour marraine Claude Thérèse de Courteville, épouse de Monsieur Bernard Niepce[1].
